The Nanzan Institute for Religion and Culture (NIRC) was established in 1975 with the mission of promoting research on religion as it pertains to Japan, facilitating dialogues between researchers and religious communities, and supporting the work of young scholars in the fields of religious studies and intercultural philosophy. To accomplish these goals, the NIRC hosts regular workshops, symposia, and other events on a variety of topics relevant to the study of religion and philosophy in Japan. These events are international in nature and typically include participants from Japan and abroad.
The NIRC is also home to several internationally renowned publications. The Japanese Journal of Religious Studies (JJRS) has been published at the institute since 1981, and the Nanzan Library for Asian Religion and Culture book series has been in publication with the University of Hawai'i Press since 1995. Additionally, the NIRC publishes in-house journals in English and Japanese as well as other occasional monographs.
Scholars interested in conducting research at the NIRC should contact the staff through the institute website for more information.
