The Eötvös Loránd University, having been founded in 1635, has traditions that go back several centuries. It is currently recognized as the best academic institution in Hungary in terms of size and standards. It is the only university in Hungary with a doctoral program in Japanese studies, and as such plays a role as a research university in that particular field. The education of the Japanese language was established in 1923. Although the course was temporarily suspended after the Second World War, it got revived in 1959. The Japanese studies major began in the 1980s, and the curriculum transitioned to the Bologna system with the country’s accession to the European Union. In 2008, the Department of Japanese Studies become independent. Currently, In addition to the bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral courses, as well as teacher training programs, there is also a minor course in translation and interpretation. It is a very popular department, with over a hundred new students, and many graduates who are active in their respective fields. In 2021, the department was awarded the Foreign Minister’s Commendations by the Japanese government for its activities.
