The Department of Japanese Studies (DJS) is one of the newest disciplines of higher education under the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. The department was previously known as the Japan Study Centre (JSC), which was founded in 1994 to fill the gap in knowledge and understanding of Japan—the leading development partner of Bangladesh. Being integrated with the university in 2002, it offered a postgraduate Diploma in Japanese Studies, which was converted into a full-fledged master’s Programme in Japanese Studies in 2006. The central goal of the department is to furnish a student with a broad spectrum of knowledge and a deep understanding of Japanese politics, economy, culture, and society, including fundamental concepts of various aspects of social sciences. DJS started offering four-year bachelor's (Hon’s) and one-year regular master courses (since 2017-18) along with a one-year Professional Masters in Japanese Studies under the Faculty of Social Sciences. Its collaboration with academic institutions and industries has become an example for the university.
