The University of Salamanca

The University of Salamanca is known as the oldest existing university in Spain. Its origins date back to 1218 when King Alfonso IX of the Kingdom of León recognized it as the ``Studium Generale''. It’s also one of the oldest universities in Europe, being historically a center for studies such as theology, law, astronomy, medicine, philosophy, and music. It celebrated its 800th anniversary in 2018, and is currently a public research university with 26 faculties and 20 research institutes on nine campuses, including the cities of Zamora, Avila, and Béjar. The university also has deep ties with Japan, with the Japan-Spanish Cultural Center established in 1999, and the East Asia Bachelor's Program in the Faculty of Philology in 2015. Currently, there are master's and doctoral programs in East Asia, and interest is increasing in Japanese and Japanese studies, along with Chinese and Korean.
