Founded in 1917, Japanese Studies at the University of Sydney is one of the oldest centres for the study and research of Asian language and cultures in Australia. Our programs build upon a solid tradition of scholarly studies in language, literature, and history, while integrating innovative research and teaching methodologies. Our academic landscape is characterized by a commitment to advancing knowledge in Japanese studies through rigorous inquiry and exploration. We offer ten levels of Japanese language education and culture units that contribute to student understandings of Japanese society, history, literature, and cultural phenomena. Our specialized units delve into Japanese film, cultural studies, media theory, and sociolinguistics, providing a more explorative environment for deeper and advanced study. Academic expertise within the discipline facilitates the development of students who acquire both a high degree of language proficiency and in-depth understanding of cultural variety and complexity. It also opens up professional opportunities for students in a wide range of employment areas including education, business, government, and non-profit organizations.
