With more than 100 years of Japanese language instruction at the University of Melbourne, the Japanese Studies program at the Asia Institute is one of the largest and most successful Japanese programs in Australia. The program offers students a comprehensive way of studying contemporary Japan through learning of not only communicative aspects of Japanese language but also cultural aspects within the areas of society and politics. In 2023, we launched a dual-degree program with the School of Japan Studies at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, which allows students to earn two bachelor’s degrees in four years. Every year, we offer short-term overseas subjects at Hokkaido University and Osaka University, giving many students opportunities to study in Japan.
